Anglers, it pays to be an Insider

Outdoors reporter Ed Killer talks about bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee and a special event with Texas Roadhouse pro, Mike DelVisco, which is happening in Vero Beach on Tuesday. CARYN SHAFFER/TCPALM

Mike Delvisco loves bass fishing. It’s his passion, and for the past three decades, it’s been his livelihood, too.

Perhaps the one thing he loves as much as catching tournament-winning largemouth bass is sharing his knowledge and techniques with eager anglers who are hoping to improve their own bass catching games.

Tuesday, Treasure Coast and Space Coast anglers will have the unique opportunity to learn from him during the special Mike Delvisco Bass Byte Fishing Seminar taking place from 6-8 p.m. at The Heritage Center, 2140 14th Avenue in Vero Beach. Tickets are $10 for FLORIDA TODAY and TCPalm subscribers (check out floridatoday.com/insider and tcpalm.com/insider for more info). Cost is $20 for non-subscribers. Only 75 tickets will be available and must be purchased by the end of the day Sunday, Nov. 12.

Delvisco, a Texas Roadhouse bass pro who is also sponsored by Phoenix Boats, Mercury Marine, Lowrance, Duckett Fishing and Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits, among others, will provide those in attendance with some of the go-to techniques which helped him reel in wins during his FLW BFL and Bassmaster Series tournament career.

“I’ll be covering a wide range of topics geared towards anglers whether they are relative beginners or advanced,” Delvisco said. “I’ll focus on the mechanical aspects of bass fishing that will help people fish better for the Florida largemouth. I’ll go over what kind of tackle I use and how to fish certain spots.”

Delvisco said he generally tailors his seminars to the audience.

“We’ll cover open water fishing tactics with topwater plugs and search baits and then switch over to discuss techniques on how to punch mats and work heavy cover, which is something we all do more of during the winter.”

Following Tuesday’s seminar, one lucky attendee will win a prize pack made up of merchandise from Delvisco’s sponsors. The prize pack includes two fishing rods, sunglasses, lures and more worth about $500.

Wednesday, Delvisco will have a meet and greet from 6-8 p.m. at the Texas Roadhouse at 1181 Malabar Road, Palm Bay. He will also have a drawing there for a smaller prize package.

Delvisco will be a regular visitor to Florida in the coming months as he participates in the NASCAR Celebrity Fishing Challenge in Homestead next week, fishes for peacock bass in South Florida, and then returns to Central Florida when he can to practice on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes for his season opening event Feb. 1-3.

I, for one, look forward to meeting Delvisco and hearing how I can improve my bass catching skills. Hope to see you all there, too.
